81% of grade 4 learners in South Africa are incapable of reading for meaning (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study 2021). Help us to change this for the children of African Angels Primary School in Chintsa East. If 65 people can donate $20 each, we can refurbish an existing building to create quiet space where our children can read in comfort, research for their projects or simply sit quietly to reflect. With your help we will create the Mbethi "Raymond" Tofu library & media centre.
Children need to read to improve their understanding of language and to expand their view of the world beyond what they see at home. Our new library and Media Centre will give each primary school child at African Angels School an opportunity to improve their future and hence, the future of their family and community.
A fully stocked library, with a quiet, comfortable reading corner and two connected computers will provide the environment for children to escape into a word of fantasy, or to research for school projects. More time spent with books and the outside world will translate into a broader knowledge of the world and the opportunities available for those who work hard and exhibit determination and tenacity.
Every year we will see up to 20 poor and disadvantaged children graduate into high school from African Angels. Children who can succeed at high school, and access university opportunities. Children who can, in turn, get jobs, support their family, growing into good South African citizens. In 2023 we expect to see over 41% of families from our local community having a child attend African Angels. This means we will see an entire community change - through education.
