This project will support indigenous women and their families from the rural highlands of Guatemala combat COVID-19. We will be providing deliveries of food and distribution of critical health information immediately, while also establishing longterm solutions to food sustainability through family gardens.
The COVID-19 public transport regulations and strict curfew in Guatemala are preventing indigenous families in rural areas from both accessing food for purchase and selling their own crops and goods in town. Additionally, many families are not fully informed about the health situation at large because of a lack of critical information in indigenous languages.
In the short term, we are providing food and cleaning supplies to families to sustain them in the immediate future. We are also distributing key information in indigenous languages via in-person visits, videos, and voice messages. Long term, we are establishing a family garden project that will provide both food access and an opportunity to earn income.
This project will aid future development of horizontal market relationships between partnering communities, maintaining the tradition of farmer's markets, and promoting regional food sovereignty through market choices and solidarity. Our goal is that these gardens will thrive beyond the period of COVID-19.
