We are on our way to opening up education opportunities to the poorest of the poor in Oyugis, thanks to your help and our newly formed computer lab.
Though we didn’t reach our goal to purchase a lab filled with computers, we are starting small and building our way up and adding more computers as we go. Thank you for making this possible!
The lab is ready to go…but for the purchase of computers. This week we will purchase our first computers right from Kisumu Kenya and begin offering computing classes to up to 40 students a week.
The computer lab will offer a wide variety of subjects available through access to a server called RACHEL Plus– Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning.
RACHEL Plus includes copies of educational websites as they existed in the recent past. By storing copies of websites directly on RACHEL Plus, no internet is required and there are no monthly subscription costs. Olalo can connect RACHEL Plus to the internet to download all the latest information from all the existing sites…at no cost.
Preloaded websites include an encyclopedia, hundreds of lectures by MIT and Khan Academy. There are thousands of educational videos covering all areas of math, science, medical, technology, computing, health guides, agriculture, music theory, career planning, Office and more.
Eventually the lab and classes will be available to the entire community. Our plan is to begin with students to learn general keyboarding skills and advance from there.
We are so excited about the potential for future opportunities to our students with the new skills they will learn by attending classes at the lab. Did I mention there is no cost to attend class for students?
Thank you for taking part in this project to offer new and relevant skills to those looking to leave behind the cycle of poverty and step into a new life cycle of hope!
Nyasaye Ogwedhu!
