Agua Pura will travel to remote, under served areas of Honduras to train local community leaders of 12 communities in water testing and water purification. 300 families will get safe water instruction and receive Water Pasteurization Indicators. Infants and children are most at risk for diarrheal disease and must be protected.
Many rural communities in Honduras are far from the main population centers and receive little or no help from the government. The drinking water is contaminated and many families lack latrines or other sanitary facilities. Children are at high risk of severe illness or death from diarrheal diseases. Local community leaders and health workers lack training and support for efforts to improve health.
Agua Pura staff will train local community leaders in simple, safe methods of water testing for fecal contamination. These leaders will test local water sources and record results. Programs will then take place in the communities to demonstrate ways families can keep themselves safe by purifying their water. They will receive purification supplies such as Water Purification Indicators. Follow up programs will help insure that families continue to use safe practices..
The goal of our program is to eliminate illness and death among infants and young children in these rural communities by providing them with safe drinking water. Diarrheal disease harms or kills young children before they can go to school or reach their potential. Healthier and stronger families will help the communities to grow.
