Cisco Networking Academy - Tools of the Trade project was partially funded. So funds from this project have been leveraged with existing program and new grant dollars to support purchasing computer repair kits for teen members participating in the Cisco Networking Academy classes. .
The first class of the Cisco Networking Academy began in the summer. Thirty-two participants range in age from 14 to 16 are engaging in the curriculum. Two additional classes are set to launch in additional Clubs in January.
In reviewing possible career pathways after training and certification, the mixed group of teens expressed interest in pursuing jobs and post-secondary careers related to information technology. Starting income levels for certified professionals were much higher than many of the teens expected to see. When asked if pursuing a high school IT internship with a local company paying $15 was of interest, the majority of hands in the room were raised.
Students use the tools during the hands-on portion of the IT Essentials class where they disassemble and reassemble a working computer. With continued fundraising the goal is to provide each participating student with his/her personal toolkit upon certification. The certification and tools will provide the opportunity for teens to earn income as an entry level IT worker.
