Global Recognition for SI4DEV through the UN SDG Action Solidarity Award
The SI4DEV COVID-19 Response has been selected by the influential UN SDG Action Campaign as one of the featured stories for the Solidarity Award, a special call from the annual UN SDG Action Awards 2020.
Amid the current global health crisis, people everywhere have come together to help neighbourhoods and communities to adapt to the new norms. Individuals and organisations have gone beyond the call of duty, to support one another.
SI4DEV is honoured to be one of the stories highlighted for this prestigious global award.
SI4DEV focuses on training and supporting community leaders to develop, implement and scale innovative products, services, and action plans for key policies and target populations. Foreseeing that a pandemic response without adequate social protection would result in societal unrest and healthcare overload, SI4DEV rapidly raised funds to implement a Covid-19 awareness campaign, with food relief, PPE and WASH stations to vulnerable and target populations.
The Solidarity Award by the UN SDG Action Campaign has recognized the most heart-warming and impactful initiatives undertaken and implemented in communities around the world that improved people’s lives, inspired resilience and lifted hopes, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The selected initiatives have been announced by United Nations on a day dedicated to Solidarity within the High-Level Political Forum, to inspire people across the world to continue taking action for people and for the planet.
Nkem Akinsoto, Managing Trustee of SI4DEV expressed delight at this recognition from the UN agency, adding, “We couldn’t have done this without our partners and volunteers who help to scale our impact across most regions of the country.”
Through the 8 Million Naira SI4DEV COVID-19 Response Fund, over 140 volunteers received relevant pandemic training and half of them were then deployed in 35 communities across Nigeria. These volunteers each delivered food and hygiene materials and educated 25 families on the coronavirus precautionary measures. SI4DEV also provided mini-grants to 18 NGOs supporting their Covid-19 response actions, and donated WASH stations and personal protective equipment to more than 10 community health centres.
