Sometimes life is hard. At least, we like to think so when things aren't going our way. We feel bad for whatever we are going through and sometimes feel sorry for ourselves. So, when I meet a family of orphaned children who are being raised by an elderly grandma and who have nothing - NOTHING - I stop bellyaching and remember once again that life can be hard. Yes, it can. But surely, my life is nowhere close to hard when compared to the fate of so many children around the world.
When these children are given the opportunity to help themselves, inevitably, they jump at the chance. Such is the story of
Godfrey 14 years old, Welcome 14, Nokukhanya 12, Junior 5 and young Quinton (not in photo) who is 2 years old. These kids are being raised by their elderly grandmother, which means that they are all taking care of each other. You wouldn't believe their excitement when they were selected to be trained as rabbit farmers and were given a pair of rabbits as part of a Livelihoods Program YOU supported. Yes, you, dear friend, saved 6 lives because of your generosity. You gave funds and we trained this small family and gave them rabbits.
The healthy looking rabbits are a clear testimony of the children’s ability to be self sufficient in their daily living. The grandmother is so grateful to AFCA and YOU for offering her grandchildren the opportunity to provide for themselves at an early age. Given her old age and the possibility that she would not be able to provide for them forever, she was ecstatic that her grandchildren are learning to rear rabbits by themselves. And the kids? They are so thrilled to eat meat on occassion and to go to school with funds from the sale of a rabbit from time to time.
