Currently, the 600 schoolchildren at Our Lady of Perpetual Help school have no playground or sports equipment. Helping the school build a playground will allow the students to develop skills that will change their lives. Not only will the equipment provide the opportunity for the children to exercise and socialize, but will also teach them sportsmanship, leadership skills, teamwork, and confidence that will impact their lives in the long-run.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help School educates at-risk Haitian children. Although the quality of education has improved through teacher training and the provision of textbooks, the school has no playground equipment or physical education program. With little to do during their playtime, many resort to fighting and teasing. This project aims to improve the children's quality of education by providing the equipment necessary to play safely, learn about sports, and develop valuable social skills.
This micro project will provide the equipment necessary for the students to engage in team sports. It will teach them teamwork, discipline, and responsibility. The project will round out their school life, complementing their academic learning with the physical activity so necessary for children's development. Teamwork will enhance the children's confidence, help build leadership skills, and make them less inclined to resort to fighting to settle arguments.
The playground and sports equipment will enhance the children's physical fitness at the same time as it develops leadership and teamwork, skills which will spill over into the classroom and remain with them for life. Giving the students the opportunity to play and learn sports will allow them to form meaningful relationships with their peers, instilling in them lifelong values of creativity and collaboration.
