This project will adapt a local water spring in Mabeta, in Limbe. A community with a population of about 11,000 persons and no clean water source. Mabeta has seen a recent outbreak of cholera, chronic wide-spread diarrhea and water-born diseases, and is also vulnerable to COVID-19.
The lone source of water in Mabeta is an untreated spring that has pooled water and is contaminated by use. Most of the population capture rain water with plastic containers. They also use sea water to do house chores. Open defecation is wide-spread because they also don't have toilets. Mabeta is a highly isolated community connected to the urban Limbe by a muddy earth road.
This project will provide a low-cost sustainable solution by adapting the available spring to provide sufficient, clean, and treated water safely. A Water Management Committee from the community will be trained on how to mantain the water point. This project is also engaging local fundraisers in Cameroon and the funding goal will be updated every 15 days after removing the local donations received.
The rate of diarrhea and water-borne diseases will be reduced in Mabeta, helping its children develop stronger and making the community more attractive for development. The communtiy will also be able to meaningfully implement COVID-19 preventive measures with potable water. Cholera is still present in fishing communities from Bakassi to Douala. This project will reduce vulnerability to cholera which killed 5 people this year in Mabeta.
