This summer, when we visited the Bendele village near Siavonga, in Zambia, we were immediately brought to the village's school. Bendele is too far away from the nearest community school, so the village some years ago created a "village school", hiring 2 teachers and building a big shelter under which the teachers could hold classes. The shelter was hosting 72 pupils, from 1st to 7th grade (primary education).
The schooling condition was very critical. The shelter, a traditional thatched roof, was in a very bad condition; the kids attended classes sitting on the floor (no desks), and during the rain season was impossible to attend school as the shelter was flooded and muddy; it was very hard for the teachers to teach to so many kids, with very different grades, in such little space.
We were asked to help improving the schooling conditions.
The village started building a small building to recover the maize that the goverment would send to feed the pupils at lunch - provided it could be properly stored.
Together with the Head Woman of the village, we studied the most viable solution, that could be quickly funded and implemented.
The project :
Thanks to the GlobalGiving generous community, the project has been completely funded!
The money has already been sent; our local volunteers will follow step by step the buildings on site. We are confident that in few weeks the Bendele kids will have their new premises, and will start having a much better enviroment for their education. We will keep you posted!
