Action for Equality: Public Events
Report 2019-20
The Equal Community Foundation’s vision is a world free from gender-based violence. Participants of the ECF Action for Equality (AfE) programme periodically conduct public Action Events within their communities in order to raise awareness of gender-based violence and discrimination.
These events are intended to give our AfE participants a chance to develop their knowledge on gender and human rights issues and to practice skills with regard to communication, critical thinking, and teamwork. The AfE participants are adolescent boys - These action events give them a platform and opportunity to discuss these issues with their community members.
During the past year, the AfE participants have conducted 185 Action Events within 20 communities, reaching out to 2,696 community members, on the following themes:
Inequities in the Division of Domestic Chores - 20 Action Events were conducted in 20 communities, attended by 121 community members in total. Participants spoke about the difference between the working hours of the average man and average woman in their community to bring up the point that women typically work longer hours when unpaid, household work is counted.
Street Sexual Harassment; Domestic Violence; Gender Discrimination - 72 Action Events were conducted in 18 communities, attended by 485 community members in total. Participants conducted campaigns, street plays, debates, and/or drew posters to draw attention to these issues in their communities.
Girls’ Education - 20 action events were conducted in 20 communities, attended by 421 community members in total. Participants conducted debates in their respective communities to discuss the importance of educating girls.
Community-centric gender issues - 73 Action events were conducted in 18 communities, attended by 1669 community members in total. Participants conducted Focus Group discussions with girls and young women in their respective communities to identify which issues most adversely affected girls and women in the community as well as to collaborate on possible solutions. Action events were then conducted in the form of street plays, debates, or discussions to draw attention to the selected issue.
