Summary

Lizzie (6th grader in elementary school) and her sister Emely (7th grader in junior high) watched the Shoulder to Shoulder Robotics team and both thought: "I want to do that." A small pilot project allowed them to participate on robotics teams in their schools, and they competed against each other at a regional competition. Their father couldn't have been more proud!! We want to encourage 200 girls to get involved in robotics. Robotics engages girls and removes their fear of STEM classes.

Challenge

Girls in the rural Frontera region in Honduras often stop attending school after they complete the 6th grade. We are trying to encourage girls to stay in school. Those that do continue onto junior high school, often have little confidence in their abilities to do math and science. This project will support 10 Robotics Teams for students in 7th grade through 12th grade. All teams will be required to be made up of 50% girls and 50% boys.

Solution

For the last 3 years, Shoulder to Shoulder has sponsored a Robotics Team to attend the International Robotics competition. Only 5 students each year are able to be on this "travel team." There is so much interest in the junior and senior high schools, that students have asked if we could expand so that there can be 1 or 2 Robotics teams at each school. If we can obtain sufficient funds, we can provide a Robotics Kit to each team. Each kit costs $600.

Long-Term Impact

This project will provide a Robotics Kit to each of the 10 schools. A requirement is that each team has 50% girls and 50% boys. This will ensure that girls are exposed to robotics and programming. We did a small pilot program in 2019, and saw that over 50 girls were excited to engage in robotics. These girls gained confidence, and we believe that this will help them to stay in school, and complete their education.
