When typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines last November it left hundreds of thousands of people homeless in its wake. We were keen to support the massive need for shelter after Haiyan and in February of this year we began working with our Filipino partner, Gawad Kalinga (GK), to do just that.
We began by demolishing damaged houses so that reconstruction could start and helped build dozens of homes in the community of Pago.
We then turned our focus to Palo - the town where Lanzlee lives.
In Palo we planned to help finish the interiors of 96 homes once GK completed their own work building the main structure of the houses. Our work finishing the homes was originally scheduled to start in May but construction was delayed for a variety of reasons.
These delays continued until the contract of our engineer in Tacloban ended. As a result, our planned work on the interior of these homes was further hindered.
We delayed this project report hoping that a solution could be found - but it has now become clear that work on the interior of Lanzlee's home will sadly not move forward.
We are continuing to support long-term recovery from Haiyan but we're currently working more with local partner organisations, rather than implementing projects through international specialists. This work is impacting the lives of countless children like Lanzlee.
If you're willing, we would love to use your donation to invest in our other long-term disaster recovery projects in Tacloban, such as those supporting education. However, if you don't want your gift spent on anything but Lanzlee, we are happy to arrange a refund.
We sincerely apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience we have caused. If you have questions or would like to receive a refund, please don’t hesitate to email Emma@IDVolunteers.org. I would be delighted to hear from you.
