Planza Island was a poor community even before typhoon Haiyan struck, and its kids were already disadvantaged. Typhoon Haiyan made things worse by damaging the local school and threatening the education of the island’s children.
The typhoon damaged several classrooms and one of those was supposed to be a computer lab. With the school’s basic classrooms damaged, longer term plans to improve education through computer classes had been halted. This put the kids at a further disadvantage and threatened their future by denying them important skills.
But the kids at Planza Island are lucky because they have you in their life!
Your fantastic generosity means that we’ve been able to get plans for the computer lab back on track.
We’ve already repaired the computer classroom, making it secure and electrically safe. We’ve also worked with members of the community to build furniture for the computer lab.
With this work now complete the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) has allocated 15 computers for the school. We’re now just waiting for DepEd staff to inspect the finished classroom and approve final delivery of the computers. The kids will then be able to learn the skills they need to find stable work in the future.
We asked the school’s principal, Virginia, to ask what our recent work meant and she had this to say.
“you have [been a] great help to our school..only your great organization had granted us help in repairing damages structure or building to school...if we will wait [for] the repair coming from our local government maybe it will take 4 years or more to priotize our school repair...that is why [we are] very thankful for the countless help to complying [with] the requirements for the E-Lab”
We were only able to support Planza Island’s school in this way because you chose to give. There are so many things you could have spent your hard earned money on, but you chose Planza Island’s kids. Thanks so much.
We’ll keep updating you about the computer lab, and our other planned work at the school, through this project’s parent page, “Support Education in Tacloban”. If you ever have any questions about how we're using your donation, please email Andy@IDVolunteers.org. We’d love to hear from you!
Thanks again, and very kind regards!
