Deepak at Rajasthan Samgrah Kalyan Sansthan (RSKS) wanted to know what people thought about his nonprofit’s advocacy and education programs. His team battles dangerous, entrenched social issues, including forced marriage, women’s inequality, illiteracy, and extreme poverty. But his most important stakeholders’—the women RSKS serves and villagers in rural Indian communities—were difficult to find once his staff of travelers wrapped up an advocacy or education program in a rural area. Culturally, Deepak also observed, it was a challenge to encourage women in remote villages to give informal, real-time feedback, as they process wasn’t a part of their normal, daily lives.
Using GlobalGiving’s Community Feedback Tool, Deepak and his team developed a one-page survey to distribute to villagers who received RSKS services. Before his team wraps up a program, they now ask program participants to complete the written survey. The most important question on the survey asks participants to rank the RSKS program from 1 to 10.
Though seemingly simple, the ranking is invaluable to Deepak:
“The question becomes so important because the organization makes improvements in its projects on the basis of the marks given by the community. The evaluation may vary in different regions. A campaign has its maximum impact in some regions, whereas it may be less in other regions. The success of a project depends on these impacts.”
Deepak’s team has improved all sorts of program aspects based on candid and insightful feedback in the surveys. They’ve increased the duration of programs, folded regional languages into program delivery, adopted measures to ensure the safety of female participants, and invited government officials to help shape programs. “The process of modifications and improvements in the programs and projects is continuously running on. In the comparison of the last 12 years, we get more contribution and association from the community for the programs, and this has changed gradually. We will have more changes and improvements in the future,” Deepak said.
