When an urgent medical condition threatened the life of a 5-year-old in their program, the Olalo of Hope-Kenya team knew they needed to fundraise for her care, and fast. Find out how they did it.
Faced with a fundraising challenge, the Olalo of Hope – Kenya team turned to GlobalGiving’s Peer Learning Network. They watched the network’s webinar, “Using Social Media on a Budget.” They took the advice in the webinar and took action on social media to try to save the child’s life.
The team created a social media campaign to fundraise for the medical fees of a young girl in their Urgent Medical Care Program. They explained how they kept the webinar advice in mind, “We focused on several aspects discussed on the webinar: use of photos, storytelling, a clear narrative of a particular situation where funds were needed, a call-to-action, having a deadline with emphasis on the urgency of the situation, and sending regular progress reports as we were updated on the situation from Kenya. We also sent a thank you immediately as each new donation was acknowledged by Facebook.”
The campaign was a huge success! “By the time it all ended, we had raised almost three times the original amount requested. Every penny was needed and used for this situation. Our organization picked up many new followers, new donors, and a very heartfelt gratitude for everyone who answered the call for this child,” shared the team.
The team is committed to learning how to get the most out of social media spending their budget. Next up for them is Twitter. “We already engage in social media, but through this peer-to-peer session, we learned how to use it more effectively to increase donations, new followers, and likes to our organization … and it works!” shared the team.
Donors are not the only ones impressed by the team’s work. Michael Rothwell, who visited Olalo as a member of GlobalGiving’s Field Program, had this to say after visiting:
“They stressed their desire to be completely community-led—ensuring all their programs arise from a need communicated to them from their community. Olalo of Hope’s dedicated team is doing fantastic work in supporting their local Oyugis community.”
