Do-It-Yourself: Nonprofit Financial Statement Template

Use our free template to create a two-year financial statement for your nonprofit.

A nonprofit financial statement is fundamental tool. It is a record of your nonprofit’s income and expenses. Your financial statement also demonstrates that your nonprofit has spent income from donors, grantors, and other sources as promised and in ways that align with your mission.

Your financial statement should include:

  • Income: Typically, this includes gifts, grants, membership fees, and/or income from fundraising events or investments.
  • Expenses: Typically, expenses are broken into two distinct sections—overhead expenses and program expenses. Overhead includes management, general, and fundraising expenses (for example, rent and utilities). Program expenses are associated with the fulfillment of your mission (for example, the cost of supplies for a dance class).
