A Message From Mari

In the face of unprecedented suffering in 2017, you responded. Our founder thanks you.

2017 tested us all.

It tested our promise to protect refugees from harm, irrespective of borders and places of birth.

It tested our resiliency in the face of devastating natural disasters, which rocked communities around the world, back to back.

It tested our commitment to hold on to common ground, as political and ideological chasms seemed wider than ever.

You responded with awe-inspiring resolve.

Over 15 years ago, I founded GlobalGiving to prove that anyone, anywhere, has the power to change the world. I am both proud and grateful to report that the GlobalGiving community has never been stronger. Together, we are changing the world.

When more than 640,000 Rohingya Muslims fled to Bangladesh to escape slaughter and rape in Myanmar, you responded. This made it possible for Dr. Iftikher Mahmood, a Bangladeshi-American pediatrician and nonprofit founder, to deliver lifesaving medical care to mothers and babies in crowded refugee camps.

When powerful hurricanes hit Texas, Florida, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico … when earthquakes ripped through Mexico … when wildfires raged in California, you responded. This meant that a coalition for the homeless in Houston found 400 apartments for Hurricane Harvey survivors who lost everything in the storm—and when survivors walked into their new homes for the first time, their pantries were stocked and their rooms were furnished.

When drought, mixed with years of ethnic and political conflict, put more than 20 million people in South Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia, and Kenya at risk of starvation and famine, you responded. Because of your support, one powerful woman, Fatuma Abdulkadir Adan, had the resources she needed to help her neighbors in Marsabit, Kenya feed their families via drought-resilient seeds and cash grants.

In 2017, you prevailed. You brought hope to people all over the world, in the darkest of circumstances.

Thank you.

Please take a moment to read more about your incredible impact in GlobalGiving’s Year In Review. I am honored to serve you and hopeful for what our community can accomplish together in 2018.

With gratitude,

Mari Kuraishi
GlobalGiving Co-Founder + President
