If I choose the most intensive and fulfilling period in my life, 6 months in Odessa, Ukraine comes one of tops of the list.
I did internship at Way Home, a local charity organization that supported homeless people and street children. Apart from my initial task to write grant applications, I visited a shelter for street children time to time. I was amazed by how warm and strong those children could be even when they themselves faced serious challenges.
Staff members of Way Home impressed me as well. They were dedicated, took flexible approaches when solving complicated problems, had a courage to confront with local authorities when necessary to protect people in need and were very nice people.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine deeply schocked me. I remember the beautiful cosmopolitan city of Odessa very well; Derybasivska Street - a lively pedestrian walkway, the famous Potemkin Stairs, the beautiful central station, a cosy beach on the Black Sea, the gorgeous opera theater and many other locations.
I learnt that Way Home is working to support people in need amid this emergency situation. They take groups of refugees abroad. They distribute food and hygiene kits for disadvantaged families that live in Odessa as well.
I've observed many ongoing activities to support those who fled to neibouring countries. I want to stress that it is also critical to support those who remain in Ukraine.

大学生時代に、ウクライナのオデッサで約半年間を過ごしました。
AIESEC(アイセック)という学生団体を通じて、ホームレスの自立やストリートチルドレンの支援を手がけるWay HomeというNGOでインターンシップをさせてもらいました。
The Big Issueのような情報誌を発行して、街頭販売により現金収入を確保できるようにしたり、ストリートチルドレンのためのシェルターを運営していました。シェルターの責任者は肝っ玉母さんと呼びたくなるような女性で、子どもたちからも信頼を集めていました。難しい年頃のティーンエージャーにも、遠慮せずに踏み込んでいくタイプの豪快な人でした。子どもたちの明るさや好奇心旺盛さにも感嘆させられました。
オデッサは黒海に面した港町で、陽気で開放的な気質の人が多く、ユーモアやジョークの街として知られています。
こんな事態になるなんて想像もしなかった状況を映像やニュースで見て、胸がつかえる気持ちです。
そのような状況下でWay Homeがオデッサで緊急支援を展開していることを知りました。隣国に避難を希望する家族を国境まで送り届けたり、ウクライナに留まる人のために食料支援などを行っているそうです。
3月9日時点で、ウクライナの人口4000万人のうち200万人以上が国外に逃れています。報道を見ていると、ウクライナに国外に逃れた避難民を支援する活動が次々と立ち上がっています。一方で大多数の人は、未だウクライナ国内に留まっています。国際機関やNGOの多くは、ウクライナ国内で大規模な支援活動を展開するには至っていないようです。
これ以上ない困難な状況下のウクライナで活動を続けているWay Homeへの支援をお願いします。寄付はもちろんのこと、SNSでの情報の拡散も大きな助けになります。
