In mere minutes, entire settlements were erased. Today, nearly 700 people are dead, 3,000 are missing, and over 90,000 are fighting to survive in the aftermath, including 17,000 children in desperate, urgent need. Vital lifelines have been severed, with 80 bridges and 40 kilometers of highway completely destroyed.
This tragedy is the result of a crisis Nepal did not create. Situated in one of the most fragile landscapes on Earth, the small nation is absorbing the impact of forces far larger than itself. As Himalayan ice loss has doubled since 2000, glacial lakes have expanded by more than 150 percent. Outburst floods that once occurred once a century are now striking every three to ten years. The people who live so gently on this earth are paying the highest price for a climate imbalance they didn't cause.
On April 28th, 2026, I stood at Everest Base Camp, having completed a trek most wouldn't attempt - navigating the steep Himalayan trails with polio in my left leg.
