This year marks my 50th birthday, and I would love for you to join me in an endeavour close to my heart, that I believe will make a real difference.
Many of you may know that I am a Trustee of a children’s non-profit in West Africa called AfriKids. We work in marginalised communities in Ghana to ensure that children are safe and in school. I first supported this organisation when I was at Deutsche Bank in the UK when it was our chosen as our Charity of the Year. Fifteen years on, despite leaving both Deutsche Bank and London, I’m honoured to now serve on their Board, helping guide their mission and growth.
I’ve been blown away by the spirit, warmth and steadfast resilience of Ghanaians and so, in honour of my 50th Birthday, instead of any gifts, I’d love you to join me in supporting one community to change their children’s lives by enabling them to go to school. Every dollar we raise will go so far to make a difference for families.
The community we’ll support is based in Binduri, an area in far north Ghana in West Africa where 7 in 10 families are living in multi-dimensional poverty – many with mud huts for homes and enough food for just one meal a day. The fight to survive often overshadows the dreams of education and 1 in 4 children growing up here do not go to school. Instead, almost half (46%) are working in child labour.
Yet, despite these challenges, the community spirit and unwaveringly commitment to make a better life for their children remains unshakable. They are making remarkable strides, but we can unlock their full potential.
The difference we will make together
It costs USD12,200 / GBP 9,000 / NZD 20,500 per year to deliver AfriKids’ proven program to tackle the root causes of poverty in a community and I’m really hoping we can reach this target.
With these funds, AfriKids will:
✔️ Support 480 children to access quality education by ensuring those at-risk of dropping out or are out-of-school can attend and succeed in class, with improved resources and support for families.
✔️ Empower Mothers with the tools to secure stable incomes, ensuring their families can afford to send all their children to school - – even girls and children with disabilities who are often left behind.
✔️ Educate 1,450 Community Members on the Importance of Education for children and encourage them to prioritize their children’s schooling above child labour or child marriage.
✔️ Advocate for Systemic Change by lobbying for policy reform and greater investment from governments into long-term educational opportunities for all children.
