My name is Zahra Yagana, and I’m the founder and former director of the Afghan non-profit, Green Home. While in Kabul, I was personally involved in helping victims of systematic attacks on Hazaras for several years. I coordinated the humanitarian aid and helped during the devastating attacks on the maternity ward run by Doctors Without Borders in Kabul, the massacre and forced displacement in Mirza Awlang, the attack on the coal miners, the terrorist attacks on the Enlightenment Movement, Mawoud Academy, and Sayed-ul-Shuhada Girls School. Thousands of Hazaras have died and injured in similar attacks. My team and I provided assistance to victims’ families, helped with the treatment of the wounded within and outside Afghanistan, and found education opportunities for the traumatized and injured students.
Following the collapse of the Afghan government, I was evacuated and arrived in the US in August 2021. Currently, I serve as the director of community development at Bamyan Foundation, a Hazara diaspora-run organization in Washington DC. Our main goal at the Foundation is to raise funds to provide support for the Hazara victims of the genocidal attacks in Afghanistan, and to provide scholarships to make education accessible to Hazara youth, particularly girls.
