In Bom (pseudonym) in central Afghanistan, severe drought fueled by climate change has turned fields once lush with wheat and orchards heavy with fruit into barren, cracked earth. Ancient trees now stand wounded and half-dead. New saplings could no longer survive. Even the migratory birds had stopped coming--for where there is no water, there is no life.

Year after year, farmers have dug deeper into the ground, desperately chasing the vanishing trace of water. Their hands, once proud and strong from harvesting, have not touched a wheat ear for years. Without water, livelihoods have withered. Half the population is being forced to abandon the land their ancestors cherished.

Afghanistan is among the ten countries most vulnerable to extreme weather and climate disasters. It ranks fourth on the global risk index and eighth in terms of vulnerability and lack of preparedness to adapt. While 60% of the population relies on agriculture, the country endured its worst drought in 30 years last year and now faces its second consecutive year of severe drought.

But in the face of this devastation, our community did not give up.
With the help of local families, the diaspora, and generous benefactors, they united around one powerful vision: to build an earthen water dam that can capture spring and rainwater and harness a stream of water that would otherwise be wasted. This dam will allow them to irrigate fields and orchards in the dry seasons, revive the soil, enable families to stay, and bring life back to the villages.

The dam has been designed and is being implemented by two experienced engineers. It is being constructed under strict supervision, with full transparency and local oversight. Once completed, it will be 285 meters long, 75 meters wide, and 17 meters high, with a large basin. It will store enough water to irrigate over 2,000 Jeribs (about 990 acres) of farmland, transforming thousands of lives, restoring farmlands, saving orchards, and sustaining families who would otherwise be forced to leave.

The total estimated cost of the dam, including sediment traps, is $200,000. Through extraordinary effort, often with support from family members living abroad, local people have already raised $150,000. With this support, two-thirds of the dam’s main structure has already been completed, and work is ongoing.
But now, they face a critical funding shortfall. That is why community members reached out to the Bamyan Foundation to help organize this fundraising effort.

Without an additional $50,000, this life-giving project cannot be finished. Fields will remain dry, families will be forced to leave, and a generation’s hard work and sacrifice will be lost. We would like to raise $10,000 USD via this fundraiser.

Your support can change this story!

By contributing, you are restoring life, preserving a community, and helping them fight back against the global climate crisis. You are telling these farmers, mothers, and children that they are not alone, that their struggle is seen, and their future is worth fighting for.

Please, stand with us. Every dollar is a drop of hope. Every donation brings us closer to a future where fields bloom again.
Join us. Help us finish what we have started. Let’s bring water and life back to our people.
