Energy For Opportunity (EFO) is a not-for-profit organization working to improve livelihoods in West Africa through the provision and installation of clean, sustainable, photovoltaic, electricity-generating infrastructure. It was established in 2008 by two individuals, Simon Willans and Paul Munro, who had previously worked together on a number of renewable energy projects in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Uganda. Update

Dear All,

The actually implementation of this project unfortunately is still currently on hold do to the current political situation in Mali. Currently both the US and UK travel departments recommend against all travel to Mali, and we will wait until the situtation improved before we can physcially implement the project. Nevertheless, the situation does appear to be improving in Mali, and we are optmistic that we will be able to realised in the near future. Also, as noted in the previous update,  Salamale is fortuantely located some distance away from the troubled areas in Mali (in the north). As soon as things improve, we will be stepping up a gear in terms of fundraising and planning for the project. We will be sure to keep you posted.

For more information about the current situation in Mali please see the following

Kind regards,

PROJECT COMPLETE!!!

We are pleased to announce that the project for the installation of a solar power system at Madina Community Health Post, Madina, Tonko Limba Chiefdom, Kambia District, Sierra Leone, has been completed successfully, well ahead of schedule.

EFO recently recieved extra funding from Global Sunrise (http://www.globalsunrise.net/) and the Bridge Street Church Foundation (http://www.bridgestreetchurch.com/), which allowed us to make this project a reality.

We here at Energy For Opportunity, as well as the 5,714 people who reside in the Madina catchment area, are greatly appreciative of all of thedonations which helped enable this project to proceed.   Overall, we are very pleased with the result of this installation as it will have an immediate and long-lasting impact on the people of Madina, Sierra Leone.  Attached are some pictures taken by our local engineer during the project.

Project Report - Solar Energy For Madina Community Health Post

The Madina clinic serves an estimated catchment population of 5,714 people and provides primary health care for 13 villages. Without any form of energy, it is limited in the quality and variety of services it can offer the community members who rely on the facility for their medical needs. Solar power can provide the ideal solution, providing cost effective, low maintenance energy for lighting, equipment and other critical needs. This project will help to dramatically health care provision in the region. Vaccines will now be effectively stored, lighting will enable access to health facilities at night and energy will power basic equipment such as microscopes, contributing to the improved quality and access of care these communities receive.

While the physical implementation of this project has not yet started, we have had some excellent success in terms of sourcing funds to the make the project a reality. The Bridge Street Foundation in Canada kindly gave a $2,000 grant towards the project, while the Wesleyan Church of Sierra Leone has agreed to provide support for the purchasing of relevant electrical materials for the project. Finally the student run organisation, Global Sunrise, is actively campaigning to raise funds for the project.

Currently another US$2,000 is needed to get the project started. It is our great hope that we can have it completed before the end of the year. A big thanks goes out to all of the project’s supporters so far.
