Mission

We work with children and young adults from Moscow orphanages. Our mission is to help every child to learn and develop as a person, overcoming the negatives of an institutionalized past. Step Up is the first organization in Russia which, since 1999, has worked to provide orphans with a quality education, to motivate them to learn. We help graduates of orphanages to complete school, find jobs, pass college/university entrance exams. We provide specific help necessary to overcome the psychological complexes that plague orphans. We enable institutionalized orphans and orphanage graduates to make wise, mature and healthy decisions for their own live. We also work surmount and eventually change the prejudice against orphans that is so prevalent in Russian society. In Step Up we have a unique community of students, teachers, and volunteers built on healthy relationships, trust and respect - features that orphans often lack in the institutions. Our academic approach is specially designed to "de-victimize" our students. It combats hopelessness and powerlessness and fosters self-confidence. In 1999-2009 Post-Orphanage Education Center existed as a project within ROOF (Russian Orphan Opportunity Fund). Since September 2010 it is an independent organization "Step Up".

Programs

Students can independently choose the level of education they require to realize their goals. Step Up is open to graduates from all kinds of orphanages: special needs, correctional, and ordinary orphanages. We work as an evening school and teach all school subjects at different levels, from elementary to upper secondary. We provide an opportunity to receive state diplomas for completing elementary and secondary education. Step Up allows students to deepen their studies of subjects that are essential to obtaining a higher education. We also support and tutor those of our students who study in colleges and universities. We aim to expand our students' sphere of social interaction, so as to foster their personal development. The range of extracurricular activities is designed specifically to help combat the negative personality traits formed during institutionalized life. A broad range of extracurricular activities awakens students' interest in the world around them as a subject in its own right, combating nihilism, exposing them to culture, philosophy, history, sport, etc. Students slowly learn the polite and appropriate behavior for different social settings. Extra-curricular activities include: - Trips and excursions, - Vocational orientation and job-finding sessions, - Theatre Studio, - Literature Club and Foreign Culture Club (where one culture is - Football (Soccer) Club, - Cooking sessions, - Photography master-classes, - Student Council and Student Newspaper.
