Mission

Heshima Kenya is a 501(c)(3) US nonprofit and registered Kenyan charity based in Nairobi, Kenya. Heshima is the Swahili word for "respect" and we specialize in identifying and protecting separated and orphaned refugee children and youth living in Nairobi. Our innovative shelter, education and community outreach services enable and empower unaccompanied refugee children, especially adolescent girls, to live healthy lives.

Programs

Heshima Kenya's multi-pronged and holistic approach treats not just discreet symptoms of the girls' disenfranchisement, but addresses their entire refugee experience. Our therapeutic model provides programs that protect, nurture, educate, empower, and provide a foundation for economic independence. While the refugee crisis in Kenya's camps and in Nairobi expands well over 600,000 refugees, Heshima Kenya is among only a handful of organizations in Nairobi promoting livelihood programs for urban refugees. Furthermore, we recognize the importance of educating our partners in government, the NGO sector, policy groups, and civil-society actors about the legal, psychosocial, and economic challenges experienced by the girls and young women we serve. Our advocacy focuses on refugee protection, child protection, and the rights of women and girls.
