Triumphing Against the Odds as a Teen Mom

By Madeline Balser | Development Manager

Laureen, a 23-year-old single mother, faced numerous challenges when she gave birth to her daughter while in Class 7. Returning to school seemed impossible due to her parents' financial limitations and her role as a young mother. However, everything changed when RefuSHE offered Laureen a full education sponsorship.

"When RefuSHE found me, I was on the verge of giving up. They motivated me and made me believe that being a young mother was not the end of the world," she shares.

With RefuSHE's help, Laureen's daughter was placed in the Safe House, where she received care while Laureen attended boarding school. During holidays, Laureen received support for rent, school fees, and her daughter's education.

Laureen describes high school as both challenging and rewarding. "I've been through a lot. Studying as a young mother has not been easy, but I always motivate myself because I know it will pay off one day. My favorite subject is math."

Since joining Form 1, Laureen has taken on leadership roles and currently serves as a dorm and entertainment prefect. "I have learned that leadership comes with responsibility. Everyone is watching you."

Being a young mother was particularly difficult when Laureen was in Form 1. "Having to go to boarding school and leave my daughter behind used to trouble me a lot. I would hear her cries in my head. But when she moved in with my sister, life became normal again. I felt like a student and started doing things like other students."

In addition to her leadership role, Laureen is also a top performer and has maintained a good academic record.

"My daughter is my biggest motivation. I am both her mother and father. If I don't take my education seriously, her future will be at risk."

Laureen dreams of traveling the world with her daughter, but more importantly, she dreams of completing her education and pursuing a career in law. "I want to be a lawyer advocating for girls' rights. I want to be their voice."

Laureen expresses that RefuSHE has been a beacon of hope in her life. "I was at my lowest point when RefuSHE found me. But today, my daughter is in school, and our lives have significantly improved."
