Look At What Your Gifts Are Doing!!

From displaced to finding a home -- thank you!
From displaced to finding a home -- thank you!

A report came in earlier this week that shows just how much your gifts are making a difference to South Sudanese families. These poor people have been through so much, many knowing nothing but war and violence, but thanks to your gifts and compassionate support, hope and healing is beginning to be seen.

This is no better illustrated by a simple road sign that appeared near one of the villages where displaced families are now calling home. The sign reads: Something Good Happening Here.

Over the past few months, your gifts have enabled drastic transformation. Here are just some of what has been able to happen thanks to you ...

Men and women ihave been eagerly participating in literacy classes where they are now learning to read and write. Though it may not seem like much to us, education, especially for a community of people who missed out on an opportunity to go to school during the civil war years, is a priceless gift.

These classes are empowering men and women wto consider starting small businesses and embracing other opportunities never before possible.

Another encouraging step has been seeing people who only a few months ago where lost, confused, and worried about their future, find hope in basic farming and fishing. Your gifts have actually taught more than 80 fishermen how to make fishing nets as well as environmentally safe techniques that will help them catch more fish without harming the rivers and ponds where they fish from.

Gardens are growing, children are going to school, and fishermen are bringing home nets full of fish. Yes, thanks to you, something good is definitely happening in South Sudan!

Saved Thanks to YOU!

She
She's safe and at school thanks to YOU!

When we first found Oyshi she was in great danger.

Living in Bangladesh, and in extreme poverty, her parents could not afford to keep her in school. At only 12 years of age, staying in school was not only important for her future, but also for her safety.

Sadly, it’s common in rural villages for girls like Oyshi to be married off early to remove the financial burden on the families. And as her father was only a simple day laborer, and her mother a housewife, Oyshi was at great risk of becoming a child bride.

Thankfully, your gift arrived just in time.

Your gift was used to enrol Oyshi in a local school, and having quickly found the friendships and stability she needed, she’s now excelling at her classes and confidently facing her future. Gone are the fears she had of becoming a child bride and being married off to a complete stranger. You've saved her from something horrible. Instead, you’ve given Oyshi hope, and the opportunity to study and earn her way out of poverty.

Her teachers are very impressed with Oyshi’s commitment, and are equally excited that your gift is beginning to set an example for others in the community. We're excited to let you know that word is now spreading to neighboring villages about the importance of educating children like Oyshi, and not marrying them off. If this positivity continues, you could really be helping to change the shocking culture of child marriage in Bangladesh.

I'm sure you'll agree that this is truly wonderful news, and Oyshi and other girls in these poor villages have you to thank for this remarkable change!

Oyshi is understandably overjoyed at what you’ve done for her, explaining what life would be like without your help, “I would grow up as an illiterate woman," she says. "Now in the future I want to be an ideal teacher to teach the poor children in my community.”

Thank you for giving girls like Oyshi an education, and saving them from the horrors of child marriage.

You're Helping Families in Haiti Rebuild!

You
You're helping Jean, and his children rebuild!

From the moment Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti, your generosity enabled us to quickly stockpile tarps, and begin distributing shelter materials, and hundreds of mosquito nets to keep families safe from disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Thanks to you, our emergency response teams on the ground were able to distribute hygiene kits and food packs to the most needy, and work with partners to identify communities where diseases such as Cholera, and other water-borne illnesses would threaten the poorest families.

Jean is just one of the people that have been impacted by your quick action and generosity. When he heard the front wall of his home crack, and fall to the ground in the middle of the night, Jean yelled for his two young daughters and they all fled for their lives.

“When the house started swaying, I decided to take the kids and leave … everything was destroyed, nothing is standing,”

But as with many in his community, Hurricane Matthew flattened more than just Jean’s home. His plantain trees—the family’s only source of income—were uprooted and washed away. Years of work, and his future income was gone.

As the weeks become months, your gifts will enable World Concern to remain close to people like Jean, and communities that have suffered from this disaster. We will work together with survivors and community groups to implement medium, and long-term shelter opportunities, and water and sanitation solutions that work to protect families and help them heal.

“I have to rebuild the house,” Jean says.

Your gifts are giving people like Jean hope, and the capacity to recover, and rebuild. Thank you so much for your gifts, and for making a difference in the lives of people affected by Hurricane Matthew.
