A successful trip, and enhanced services

Several members of our Board and Operating Team traveled to the village of Awake in Northern Uganda. The goals of the trip was to review the recently installed water collection and plumbing system, review clinic operations, and build a chicken shelter. They also assessed the need for a facility maintenance program, and a fence to surround the property and improve security.

We are working to enhance our HIV diagnosis and treatment services. In addition, we are planning to expand our staff in order to offer enhanced birth and infant health services. These are much needed services, given the very high birth rate in Northern Uganda.

Also on this trip, the US-based team had the opportunity to bring musicians to perform at the clinic. This enabled the team to both promote the clinic and its services, and also build relations between the Americans and Ugandans.

Patient count is up, and we're improving the health of the surrounding area. Thank you for all of your help in making this possible.

Increasing patient traffic following events

Local children competing in our annual run
Local children competing in our annual run

Each November, we host a track meet in the village of Awake. We work with our founder, Julius Achon, and local youth organizers to produce an event that promotes health, community and sport in the Otuke District. It's the only event of its kind in the region, and the local community now treats it like a holiday.

Last November, we hosted our biggest event ever.  Over 2,500 people attended, with well over 1,500 children competing in the run.  There's a cost to hosting the event. However, the benefit is that we see a sharp increase in patient visits in the months after. The event has become one of our most effective marketing and communication tools. We've seen a 20% increase in patient visits in the past two months. This allows us to treat more local people who are suffering from malaria, AIDS, intestinal illnesses, and more. While all patients pay for care, their payments do not cover the full cost. We need the help of our supporters to ensure that we can provide high quality care to all in need, regardless of their ability to pay.

Thank you!

A great event, and water is flowing!

Last week our Executive Director traveled to Awake in Northern Uganda. The purpose of her trip was to:

  1. Host a Youth Running Race.  Each year, AUCF partners with our friends at Nike and members of the Awake community to host a running race for kids. The goal is to promote health and fitness, and also promote our health clinic. The event was last weekend, and we had over 1,300 kids participate. A huge success!
  2. Meet the New Staff. We've hired a new clinic manager, ambulance driver and clinician. All three are proving very effective in their roles.
  3. View the New Water System. Following a large fundraising campaign, we now have clean water running throughout the clinic. This was critical to our goal of preventing the spread of disease at the clinic. We reviewed the water system, and it's working great!

Thank you for all of your support.
