We're almost done!

To everyone who has donated towards our project to give 18 children a safer environment to live and grow in, the exciting news is that we have almost completed the construction of the wall. We are super excited to see our project coming to fruition and especially to know that it will not be long before our children will be feeling much safer.

Over the last three months, with the assistance of many local donors who gave in both cash and kind, as well as the GlobalGiving donors, we have almost completed the building of the wall. We should be finished by the end of March and will then be able to start installing the security gates (one for vehicle access and three for pedestrian access).

And this will not be a moment too soon as we are still plagued by crime. The foster village is particularly vulnerable during December when all the mums and many of the village staff are away on holiday with the children. This past December we decided to employ a security guard to patrol the village and he managed to thwart yet another attempted break in, though unfortunately the culprit was not apprehended. We have now added additional alarms to all the houses to increase security. Once the wall is completed and the gates erected we hope to have enough funds to top the wall with either spikes or razor wire/barbed wire as an additional measure to prevent intruders from climbing over the wall.

A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to the building of the wall. Your contribution has helped us to give our children the safety and security they need to grow and thrive.

The wall is rising!

At long last, after many months of Covid related lockdown and delays caused by the lockdown, I am happy to report that the security wall around the village is going up! Building work started in early August and good progress is being made. One long side and one short side are already completed and we are almost half way there. We have had to go rather slowly as our limited funds have only allowed us the use of one bricklayer. Our driver, Themba, and some of our post school and senior boys have chipped in to help with mixing cement, pointing and even the occasional laying of blocks on days when they were not attending school or doing other work. This has been an enormous help and the boys are learning some great skills at the same time.

Your generous donations are giving our children the hope of a safer living environment and this is so important. Here's what some of them had to say recently about the wall:

Nondumiso said, “It’s a good thing, because it will prevent burglaries.”

Wezi said, “Thank you so much for helping us with the wall. We have been so scared because of the burglaries. They stole our soccer uniforms. They even stole the soccer goal posts.”

Mhlengi also had a positive reaction, “It’s good because at the moment anybody can just walk through here.

2019 and 2020 have highlighted the need for improved security, with a number of burglaries, the theft of our school bus and other attempted burglaries having taken place on the property. Recently, our computer lab, which had only just been installed was the target of an attempted break in.

So thank you dear donors for making it possible for us to get a good start on the wall. Your generosity is going to make a tremendous difference to our children and also to future generations of children who will grow up at Kenosis. We still need some funds to complete the wall, so if you would like to ensure that our children have a safe and secure home to grow up in, please consider making another donation using this link. God bless you for your kind generosity.

Security wall plans delayed by Covid 19

Our children and community members all masked up!
Our children and community members all masked up!

Greetings to all our lovely friends of Kenosis from a sunny but cool South Africa. For all those of you who donated so generously towards the security wall for our Foster village, I wanted to give you a brief update of what is happening.

There is a saying, sometimes attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns, that "the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." Well, that is where we are with our security wall at the moment. In my last report, we were almost ready to pour the concrete for the foundation, but a few days later, the South African government declared a total lockdown of the country to try to deal with the Covid 19 pandemic that was beginning to spread around South Africa. So of course it has been months when we have legally not been able to do any construction work at all.

However, I am pleased to now report that finally, the lockdown restrictions are being gradually lifted and the construction industry is now allowed to operate normally. We have been able to complete the steel reinforcing for the trenches and all the formwork is now in place. We are now waiting for a concrete pouring expert to give us a date when he can come and supervise the pouring of the concrete. With the lockdown having caused huge delays in construction work countrywide, construction workers are now trying to deal with a backlog of urgent jobs that need doing, and we pray that it will not be long before the expert is available to come and assist so that we can get the foundations poured.

In the meantime, do please pray with us that we will be able to get the concrete poured as soon as possible, and also that more funding will come in for the construction of the wall. We are still a long way off from the total we need and the lockdown has also hampered many of our fundraising efforts and plans.

Thank you for your generosity in supporting our project. You have no idea how much we appreciate your amazing gift to our community. May God bless you for your kindness.
