Safety Rules for kids

Every year,children in Nigeria come together to celebrate children's day on 27th of May.
This year,children could not get togeter to celebrate due to the covid 19 crisis.
Olive Community Development Initiatives produced a video documentary for children at Ivy Hill  Academy school in Ilorin Kwara State teaching them how to keep safe during the lockdown and at all times.The documentary was shown to the kids through zoom to celebrate the day by the school authority with the support of thier parents.
Ivy Hill Primary school is situated at Pipeline Road in Ilorin with over 100 kids from kingdergaten level to secondary school aged 1-12.
The documenatary is titled 7 safety Body rules all kids should know.
The safety rules are:
1. My body belongs to me
2. My private part have names
3. I can shout stop when I feel unsafe
4.I should be aware of early warning signs
5. I should not keep  secrets
6. I have to keep on telling a trusted adult
7.I will be brave at all times
We do hope to get feedback from the school as soon as the school resumes.

Microsoft software application for beginners

 12 Students from different schools in Apata ajele  Eyenkorin Community in Ilorin Kwara State, Nigeria, spent their midterm break at our office as they have been looking forward to this opportunity again because they were not available during the last camp meeting where the camp participants were taught how to use the computer. This set were taught how to use the computer, how to identify certain symbols and what they stand for on the computer and how to use microsoft office word on the computer. The training was facilitated by an OCDI staff

Below are some of the Success Stories:

  •  Blessing(13years) can now use the microsoft word to type documents and she is happy about it
  •  Emmanuel (11 years) said " i didint know the parts of a computer before but now i know and i am happy about it"                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      

  •  Saheed( 15years)  is so excited to know that he can paint his pictures using the computer, being a kid who love to draw and paint, as he only believes he could only use papers and water color.

At the end of the training, the students were given a task to put into practice what they were taught, which they carried out succesfully and they were all excited about the task 

The training will continue once in a week for the students as they will be taught more on Microsoft Office Word and will be introuduced to more softwares such as Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint and Graphics designing  using the Corel draw.

21st century skills for Adolescent Girls

Every year,OCDI joins the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child(IDG).This year ,OCDI invited 200 Adolescent girls from public and private schools in Asa LGA,Kwara State to commemorate the day on friday October 11th,2019 with the theme "Empowerment for the future".

This year ,OCDI invited female professional bodies such as Engineers,Pilots, Biochemist,Journalist,Lawyers and Opthamologists to sensitize the girls on how they use 21st century skills in thier daily work and how it has helped them succeed.

Girls were divided into different groups and had sessions with the professionals.At the end of the program,some of the girls interviewed had this to say;

i. I learnt that engineering  makes works easy and faster wit the use of technology-Oyinkansola-15 years old

ii.I learnt to be bold,be able to talk in front of the crowd and have the motive of yes i can.-Glory-13 years Old

iii.I learnt to be focused on whatever i am doing and not let anyone distract me.I also learnt that technology can help me to know what the weather will be.-Charity-16 years old

iv.I leanrt that i have the right to do whatever i want.-Ayobami-12 years old.

Sessions on human rights and Child Sexual Abuse was used to kick start the program and was facilitated by a staff of the Human Rights Commission and OCDI program officer.

 We have been getting positive feedbacks from the program most especially on Human rights and Sexual Abuse.This has propelled us to intensify our efforts on Gender based violence and Child sexual Abuse programming.
