The Covid-19 situation is still having a huge impact worldwide, so also on our project in Haiti, where we support two primary schools for children who otherwise couldn’t pay for an education.
Covid-19 in Haiti and in our schools
The situation in Haiti is still very tense. Covid-19 itself has not hit Haiti as hard as it was feared, but the negative impacts of the prevention measures and lockdowns are affecting Haiti as seriously as elsewhere. The pandemic has worked as a fire accelerator for hunger and poverty. The Haitian president has revalued the Haitian Gourdes, which has led to an increase in the price of imported goods.
Luckily, our two schools could open at the end of August again, and are operating under strict preventive measures, such as obligatory face masks, physical distancing and smaller learning groups. We very much hope that everything works out and that the students can catch up on their studies!
Student fundraiser for Schools for Haiti
There is a great fundraising project starting at the Max-Weber School in Freiburg, Germany:
The students collect their renewable bottles and donate their earnings to our schools in Haiti. The project addresses two key issues: On the one hand it is a solution for the waste problem arising in the school, and on the other hand it is actively helping Haitian children to learn to read and write. The project is run by the student union with support by the teacher Dr. Seemann. Gusan, one of our volunteers, is part of the committee.
Thank you very much for your idea and engagement!
Active at Pen Paper Peace
During the last months, our volunteer-based organization has grown tremendously. We are now at about fifty active individuals who work together to achieve better education worldwide. We are so glad to have so many people all over the world, with a big diversity of skills, from research over education to translation, from fundraising over organization of events to design!! We are full of ideas for great new projects, as well under Corona circumstances as for the world after Corona, and working on putting them into practice.
We would be really happy if you join our efforts, be it in the form of donations, volunteering or sharing the word about our work. For more information, check out our website: https://www.pen-paper-peace.org/english.html
