Mixed news from Honduras

Hi!

The Covid-19 situation is still having a huge impact worldwide, so also on our project in Honduras, where we support a daycare center for single mothers who complete their education.

Covid-19 in Honduras and at Pasos Pequeñitos

Due to the Corona crisis, our day care center for children, “Pasos Pequeñitos”, is still closed and the future is still uncertain. The pandemic has worked as a fire accelerator for hunger and poverty. Sadly, nobody knows when and if it will be able to open up again. So we need all the support we can get to keep this project alive!

Christmas Calendar

On the bright side, we are very happy to inform you that we were selected again for the Christmas calendar of “24 good deeds” - this time for Honduras! The calendar is a very German tradition, and in this version features 24 charitable projects during the 24 days before Christmas eve. By buying the calendar, you can thus support 24 different social projects - one good deed per day! We are so happy to be a part of it again and to support children in Honduras! Find out more on the website of 24 good deeds: https://www.24-good-deeds.com/

Our schools are open again

Hi!

The Covid-19 situation is still having a huge impact worldwide, so also on our project in Haiti, where we support two primary schools for children who otherwise couldn’t pay for an education.

Covid-19 in Haiti and in our schools

The situation in Haiti is still very tense. Covid-19 itself has not hit Haiti as hard as it was feared, but the negative impacts of the prevention measures and lockdowns are affecting Haiti as seriously as elsewhere. The pandemic has worked as a fire accelerator for hunger and poverty. The Haitian president has revalued the Haitian Gourdes, which has led to an increase in the price of imported goods.

Luckily, our two schools could open at the end of August again, and are operating under strict preventive measures, such as obligatory face masks, physical distancing and smaller learning groups. We very much hope that everything works out and that the students can catch up on their studies!

Student fundraiser for Schools for Haiti

There is a great fundraising project starting at the Max-Weber School in Freiburg, Germany:

The students collect their renewable bottles and donate their earnings to our schools in Haiti. The project addresses two key issues: On the one hand it is a solution for the waste problem arising in the school, and on the other hand it is actively helping Haitian children to learn to read and write. The project is run by the student union with support by the teacher Dr. Seemann. Gusan, one of our volunteers, is part of the committee.

Thank you very much for your idea and engagement!

Honduras on Corona lockdown

Hi!

The corona time continues to occupy us, even though the acute risk is averted for our teams in Germany and Italy. All the more we look at our projects around the world and how we can better support the people in Haiti and Honduras so that they can get through this crisis better.

The Corona period in Honduras

After initially moderate increases, the number of cases of officially infected people is now skyrocketing in Honduras. A terrible condition for families who have lost their income and do not know how to make ends meet. Terrible for the children too, since many of the little ones have pre-existing conditions that make an infection with the coronavirus very dangerous.

Our on-site partner nph Honduras tries to help the families in need with food donations to at least avoid hunger phases. Face masks are now sewn in the “Talleres” workshops outside the capital, where children from 13 to 16 years of age usually learn the basics of a craft. The Pasos Pequenitos day care center unfortunately still has to remain closed, but the mothers are provided with a scholarship for basic nutrition.

We continue to support our projects at our best capacity, as they have now become important life savers for the people in need.

Active at PEN PAPER PEACE

Already shortly before the Corona time, we adjusted our organizational infrastructure to the needs of our supporters - so you can join PEN PAPER PEACE from anywhere in the world, at any time of the day or night. At our first volunteer call we were an incredible 25 people! We are so happy about the diverse, talented and inspiring people who work with us for better education around the world.

If you want to join in, have a look at our website! There are tasks from one time to long-term commitments, from helping out at beverage sales to financial accounting.

Thank you for being a part of PEN PAPER PEACE!

Kind regards,

Nora, Lisa, Luca, Verena, Milena, Felix, Vivi, Verena, Denise, Peter, Alissa, Malin, Sonja, Janine, Giovanna and Jana at PEN PAPER PEACE e.V.
