Still fundraising

Three months into this campaign and we are still fundraising! Despite the media attention currently being given to the ebola outbreak, more deaths in Africa are due to AIDS than any other disease (World Health Organisation 2012) and even though access to appropriate drugs has improved vastly, the issue of stigma still persists- often based on misunderstanding and yet dividing families and communities. One participant in a recent workshop told of how she was prevented from eating with her family as her uncle believed using the same utensils would pass on the virus.

Please encourage your friends to support this important work.

Getting going

We have just launched our campaign for funding for this project, waiting until after the summer break in Europe. The issue of breast ironing remains as relevant as ever in Loum, and young girls' lives continue to be affected by this cruel and ineffective practice. We are hoping that sufficient funds will be raised in the coming weeks to enable ICA Cameroon to start implementing this project with all the key people involved in continuing this tradition, using a combination of advocacy and education to change behaviours over time. In this way, the project will begin to change the lives of girls already affected, and to prevent others suffering in the same way.

Final report

This project has not attracted the level of funding that is required to enable any implementation of this specific activity to take place. ICA Benin continues to work with young people across the country to enable them to acquire skills and gain employment, and is working to find alternative ways of doing that. Any money raised for this project will be directed to support those efforts. Meanwhile please watch out for future opportunities from Benin and other ICA:UK country partners where your help is needed. Such projects depend on the generosity and support of individuals seeking to make a difference in the world.
