Back to school in Gjirokaster, 2020-style

Waiting for lunch at the soup kitchen

Dear friends,

With your help, the Roma children in NG's Gjirokaster project were able to go back to school when it reopened this fall. Donations helped set them up with shoes and clothes (because kids are always growing!), backpacks, and school supplies, as well as food bundles for families. And the children have finally been able to start returning to the soup kitchen for lunch with their friends, homework help, and activities. As you can see in our pictures, it looks a little different now, with NG adhering to all guidance on masks and social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We're delighted to have the children back!

You can contribute to this ongoing project here.

Thank you so much for your generosity in these challenging times.

Be well,

Sarah Pita

Amidst the Pandemic, Education Continues

Flowers for the teacher, Nehemia School 2020

Dear friends--

Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the experience and process of education  at every level. At Nehemiah Gateway's schools in Albania, students and staff have had to adapt to learning from home, and, this year, socially distanced hybrid learning. Our team is working hard to meet these challenges safely, while optimizing student learning and experience.

Throughout our educational programs at Amaro Tan, Nehemia School, and Nehemiah Gateway University, the team is meeting Albanian government guidance on social distancing and group sizes. Classrooms have been rearranged, and cohorts divided, at all three facilities so that group sizes and distancing can be managed. Face masks are worn, and temperatures are taken every day before school. At Nehemiah Gateway University, professors who would normally visit to teach have moved online, learning new skills so that they can continue instructing a new generation of leaders.

We are currently emphasizing fundraising for laptop computers for our teachers at Nehemia School and Amaro Tan-- an urgent need that will make it possible for teachers to move smoothly back and forth between classroom, and online learning this year. That campaign can be found HERE, and urgently needs your support.

Wishing you all the best in these challenging times,

Sarah Pita

Bringing Basic Necessities to the Villages

Dear friends,

As the weather begins to turn cooler in the remote hill villages around Pogradec, Albania, the humanitarian team at NG's clinic has started another round of aid deliveries to the people who live there. Our aid deliveries are essential to these villagers. In the years since the fall of the Albanian communist regime, many Albanians have left for the improved employment opportunities in towns and cities. Those who remain, usually because of their circumstances, see infrastructure-- roads, post offices, schools-- deteriorating and closing, leaving them isolated and living in poverty.

Nehemiah Gateway Albania's humanitarian team brings bundles of food staples, cleaning supplies, and donated clothing to about 150 households in the villages several times a year. The roads get worse every year, and delivering bundles of aid is a multi-day proposition requiring skilled driving and navigation.

The story of the villages varies little from year to year, and the needs remain. We are happy to help them-- and grateful that, in contributing to this project, you have helped them too.

With gratitude,

Sarah Pita

PS Note that, in addition to bringing aid to the villages, In Albania, Food and Medicine for the Poor helps many people in Pogradec who are living in poverty. In 2020, many people with health conditions face huge challenges to taking care of themselves. Your continued support is helping them as well.
