Our emphasis focuses on impoverished women and children, with particular attention on education and preventive healthcare for young women and girls. Our primary geographical area of focus is Tanzania; our secondary geographical focus is within the rural mountain areas of Benguet and Bontoc Provinces on Luzon Island, Philippines. Healthcare delivery and humanitarian support are in global need. Therefore, we provide these services on a smaller scale within additional developing countries where we have strong relationships with local leaders in Nepal, Uganda, Kenya, Haiti, Honduras, and Myanmar. Built on the belief that health and education are the foundation for sustainable improvements in living conditions, Health & Hope Foundation takes a holistic approach to community development. Identifying at risk groups and delivering a broad spectrum of health and support services, we build strong foundations for sustainable health and success. Dental, vision and non-surgical medical care is delivered, via our portable clinics, to those who otherwise lack effective access to healthcare services. Additional community needs illuminated through healthcare delivery are ameliorated by working hand in hand with local leadership and health care providers to enable villagers to gain access to light, clean water, hygiene, safe living conditions, and education. We operate with minimal administrative costs, and believe the sharing of knowledge and resources (not money) are keys to affect positive change for global health as well as to promote the sensation of "hope" within individuals. We engage with both non-profit and for-profit groups for mutual support in our global missions. To enhance achievement of our mission goals, we partner with Medical Relief International, Days for Girls, MPOWERD, Blessings International, Restoring Vision, Shark Eyes, MIT Water Engineers, USC student "Club H20", Bridges K-8 Charter School, and Pauole Sport, together with organizational support and strategic coaching though memberships with Global Washington and 501 Commons. 1. Healthcare Our healthcare clinics in Tanzania provide community care with priority given to children, women, elderly and disabled. Each is given the opportunity for dental, vision and medical exams. Treatments are available for dental pain, fillings, periodontal and preventative care, glasses and ophthalmic medication, UV sunglasses for cataract prevention, treatment and medication for acute medical conditions, nutritional counseling. We coordinate with local leaders and doctors for further care for chronic conditions. We provide the opportunity for healthcare providers and others to share their knowledge and skills internationally, as we work in-country along side developing world health providers and community leaders. Exercise is critical to health. Unfortunately, sports programs are unavailable or limited for girls and women in Tanzania. Our Sport Program is established for boys, girls, and women to play soccer, netball and running games. This develops skills, pride, confidence, respect, and team work, as well as being a fun outlet while improving health and reducing stress. In the Philippines, Health & Hope sponsors portable healthcare outreach and education clinics to indigenous people of the mountain provinces of Luzon. These clinics provide dental, medical, nutrition, and emergency preparedness clinics for mud slide evacuation and first aide to isolated communities. The clinics, funded by Health & Hope, are organized and led by our in-country Health and Hope Representatives with whom we have a long history. Clinics occur several times per year, and at far less cost than otherwise possible with a US Team. 2. Education We initiated and sponsor Tumaini Tutor School for 90 single or double orphaned children in Mwanza, Tanzania. Health & Hope Foundation provides free or sliding-fee education to children who could not otherwise afford to attend school. Tutored instruction is provided for students who are able to attend government school, but are behind due to intermittent schooling due to illness (malaria, HIV, diarrheal diseases) and /or poverty. A Scholarship Program is available through Health & Hope for donors to sponsor a child's education beyond Grade 5 level, while they attend Tumaini for ongoing tutored education, allowing them to catch up or maintain with their peers. Sponsored students volunteer by tutoring younger students or help in the community to "pay back" their scholarship "loan". We provide small group instruction with caring teachers who effectively mentor and advocate for them. Tumaini ("Hope" in Kiswahili) is like a second home for the children, where a meal is available to fill an empty tummy. We offer all subjects, full or half day, 6 days per week. To sustain Tumaini School as a place impoverished children can obtain free education, we will offer adult English and Computer courses to the Mwanza community at a fair price. Our priority is in education of young girls and women, and we strive to keep girls in school. To promote school attendance, Tumaini has a separate girls' bathroom and girls are provided a washable feminine hygiene kits with hygiene supplies always available. Education and mentoring regarding sexual safety for both sexes is ongoing with these students becoming the finest ambassadors to spread this message. In selection of deserving Tumaini School students to receive Scholarships for secondary school, girls are given top priority. Tumaini Sewing School offers a bridge program for young women and men. A focused bridge program for education in English and Computer Skills and job placements is in inception. Health & Hope also mentors 45 women of all ages in our Women's Business Program in Mwanza, Tanzania. Most of the women are widows, all raising several children, their own and others. With little chance for employment, the women previously worked independently as they "crashed rock" by hand into bits for construction gravel. Through mentorship, they have diversified into small business groups in healthier, more profitable, chosen fields (fruit, vegetable, poultry, and fish vending, pottery, sewing etc). The results are confidence, pride, hope, and means to feed their children. 3. Community Health and Safety Health & Hope Foundation utilizes the opening provided in the healthcare setting to listen and learn of community concerns which affect health and education. We provide education and tools for field microbiology testing for safety of community water sources, water purification systems access to malarial bed nets, safe sex, HIV testing and treatment, improved construction for shelter safely, and solar lighting. We make available to other groups the EC-Kit for field testing E. coli in water sources, which was formerly offered through MIT Water Safety Engineering. We utilize and grow our networking positions to help link community health and safety needs with individuals or organizations who will work with the community to address the change or improvement required. 4. Promote Volunteerism Health & Hope Foundation was formed to gather volunteer healthcare providers and educators, as well as other individuals from varied walks of life, who wish to affect global change by promoting healthcare and education to individuals and communities who otherwise have limited access to these resources. Opportunity for volunteerism is available to individuals seeking a multi faceted volunteer experience that allows them to focus their energies on their area(s) of passion. Our International Volunteer Program is available to not only professional healthcare providers but to those of all walks of life. Living, working, learning and playing together with no "pecking order" is a keystone of global understanding. This opens doors for our in-county volunteers to participate fully and develop community leadership and communication roles. They function as key members of HHF International Teams, and are in position to continue work on needed programs once we have gone home. Our At-Home Volunteer Program contributes to our mission in healthcare and education through making washable feminine hygiene kits for distribution by our International Teams. Our At- Home Volunteers sponsor Tumaini Tutor School students to attend government as well as the supplemental free education at Tumaini, and further participate in education through our PenPal Program with the children.
