WASHINGTON, D.C. - March 2016 - The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to GlobalGiving to help develop and test GG Rewards, the system that GlobalGiving uses to recognize and reward its nonprofit partners for their efforts to learn, improve, and grow their impact. With this investment, GlobalGiving will explore ways of incentivizing nonprofit effectiveness and providing information to donors about nonprofit performance.
This two-year grant will allow GlobalGiving to understand what incentives drive nonprofits to engage and what visible signals drive more thoughtful giving in donors. It will also allow GlobalGiving to experiment with different presentations of its fee in an effort to discover new ways to help donors think about overhead and the real cost of producing social impact.
"We work with thousands of nonprofits around the world, and we've seen our partners struggle to measure, improve, and communicate their effectiveness," said Mari Kuraishi, president and co-founder of GlobalGiving. "We also know that donors lack meaningful and accessible information to help them make informed giving choices. GlobalGiving's GG Rewards system has the potential to fill the gap by tracking nonprofit effectiveness and helping potential donors make better giving choices."
"Through our Giving By All initiative, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is supporting research and innovation to explore how and why individual US donors make giving decisions. GlobalGiving's learning orientation and powerful platform provide a perfect lab in which to test ideas and better understand donor behavior in real-time situations and at scale. GlobalGiving demonstrates its deep understanding of the needs of donors and nonprofits through GG Rewards,"explained Victoria Vrana, Senior Program Officer, Philanthropic Partnership Team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
GlobalGiving is the first and largest global crowdfunding community for nonprofits. Since 2002, GlobalGiving has helped raise more than $228 million from more than 533,000 donors for more than 14,000 projects. Through GG Rewards, GlobalGiving ensure that the funding generated by its site supports organizations that continually strive to become more effective in their work.
Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people's health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people-especially those with the fewest resources-have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life.
