Worldwide, not all zoos provide good animal care, resulting in suffering, frustration and pain. We know animal carers want to improve but they just don't know how. Our project combats this by delivering workshops, fostering positive relationships and providing vital support to empower people to care for their animals, ensuring all animals can thrive, not just survive. Working in over 10 countries, our project changes attitudes and behaviour, helping hundreds of animals live a life worth living.
A captive animal's welfare is completely dependent on us. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of the thousands of zoos and aquariums around the world make animal welfare a priority. Animal suffering is exacerbated by animal carer's apathy, a lack of knowledge and expertise. Closing zoos is not always in the best interests of the animals. With the number of zoos around the world unlikely to decrease, our work ensuring animals receive high standards of care and welfare is needed even more.
This project will take a compassionate approach, delivering practical and achievable change for animals in over 10 countries in 2020. With the aim of significant and immediate improvements in animal welfare, the upskilling of hundreds of zoo staff is at the core of our project. Learning new skills in areas such as enrichment or healthcare generates long-term change in animal care. Providing hands-on training workshops and support, we concentrate on what can be done now to improve animal's lives.
This project provides training in skills that improve animal carer's day to day animal care practices, improving the lives of hundreds of animals around the world. Increasing confidence in care staff inspires further improvements and innovative approaches to good animal care. By sharing knowledge and education, the resulting behaviour change leads to long-term, sustainable improvements in animal welfare, helping to ensure captive wild animals live a life worth living.
