The dropout rate in Argentina is one of the highest in Latin America. Argentine students lead the ranking of absenteeism of the 65 countries participating in the Pisa tests. ACDI / AVSI Argentina is responding to this great challenge with "Padrinos Solidarios", a comprehensive education program that has benefited more than 2,000 children in 15 years of trajectory.
The dropout rate in Argentina is one of the highest in Latin America. According to the UNESCO, only the 48% of students finish high school on time and terms. In addition, Argentinean students lead the ranking of absenteeism beside the 65 countries that participate in the Pisa tests. ACDI's challenge is to encourage children and adolescents to fully enjoy the educational system and take advantage of their education.
ACDI found an answer to young's inappetence to study by provideing emotional and human accompaniment. Since 2001, the Association develops a "long distance adoption" program where a person or a group of people support a child financially and emotionally. Nowadays this Program, called "Padrinos Solidarios" benefits more than 500 children and provides various methods, plans and activities that facilitate a positive and responsible participation of young people in the learning process.
This program has a trajectory of 15 years and it's impact was proved by a university research. The dropout rate has decrease between the 10 schools involved and we count about 2000 children beneficiares. ACDI's method has permitted to reverse the experience of social inferiority and "inability" by providing experiences of participation, recognition, and skill development. However, the recent Argentine economic crisis has called to a strengthening of material and structural support.
