Reinhold, one of the youngest rhino calves to arrive at the orphanage this year, has continued to grow stronger following a very difficult start to life. Arriving at just two days old after being neglected by his mother, Reinhold was far too young to join the older orphaned rhinos and needed both intensive care and companionship.
Enter Romeo the goat – Reinhold’s rather unconventional but much-loved companion. Romeo was introduced to provide the young calf with the company and comfort he would naturally have received from another rhino. The pair have since developed a wonderful bond, spending their days together, playing, exploring and, on occasion, with Romeo even hitching a ride on Reinhold’s back.
Romeo plays an important role during this vulnerable stage of Reinhold’s rehabilitation, providing companionship until he is old enough and strong enough to integrate with the other rhinos. Their unlikely friendship has become a very special part of Reinhold’s journey towards eventually returning to life with his own kind.
