River Bridge Old People’s home
Fazhimaro explains how the River Bridge home helps older people.
“I am a retired miner with 24 years experience of underground mining. If this home did not exist I would have died long time ago. I am old and disabled and would not be in a position to support my self.
Things are now better for us in the home and we can get food more easily. With improved access to water, we will be able to grow more vegetables. I cannot work because of my disabilities and shortage of medication has affected my health . I cannot get drugs to treat my hypertension. All I can get is pain killers from the local clinic.
In the past, many older people used to fall sick because of lack of food. At the home we are now managing to get three meals with porridge for breakfast and there is always lunch and supper including tea and bread at times. Before, we only had one meal a day.
I am paralysed so I cannot work but many of my colleagues who are fit are helping run the home. They fetch water and firewood for the kitchen and water the crops and some also help with our piggery project.
I thank you very much for the support”
