Meet some of our library beneficiaries!

By Vanessa Reksodipoetro | Project Leader

Dita, our library member since elementary school
Dita, our library member since elementary school

The YUM Cipanas Community Library is filled with children every afternoon starting from 1.30pm until 5.30pm. From toddlers hanging on to the hands of their older siblings, to high schoolers looking for a novel to read, the library accommodates up to 1,000 visits every month.

We would like to introduce to you two of our library beneficiaries: Dita and Dewi.

Dita is 16 years old and is currently in 11th grade. She has been a faithful and loyal library member since she was in elementary school. She loves reading novels and her current favorite is "Middle School the Worst". Dita says that "the YUM library always has all the books that I am looking for and that's why it's one of my favorite places to go to!".

Dewi is another one of our library members. She is 12 years old and is in 6th grade. Besides being a library member, Dewi is also part of YUM's Family-Based program, where students and their families are sponsored so the student can stay in school, follow tutoring lessons at YUM, receive two medical check-ups during the year and the parents join a parenting workshop every 2 months. Dewi is an orphan and currently lives with her elder sister who is married. She loves to help her sister cook everyday and dreams of becoming a chef when she grows up. Dewi is an avid member of the library, coming in every day to participate in the various activities, especially the Arts & Crafts activities as she also loves to draw.

Would you like to help more students like Dita and Dewi? GlobalGiving is helping us get more donations this end of year. By donating on #GivingTuesday (Tuesday 29 November), your donation will be matched by 50%! The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has generously provided $500,000 in matching funds for #GivingTuesday, enabling GlobalGiving to match donations up to the first $1 million raised! Matching will begin at midnight EST and conclude at 11:59:59 pm EST or when funds run out. This is the largest amount of donations GlobalGiving has matched in one day!

If that's not enough to be excited about, GlobalGiving will also be matching new recurring donations starting from November 29th until December 31st! A generous anonymous donor has agreed to match new monthly donations at 200% up to $100 per donor

We're extremely excited about these opportunities and we hope that you are too! Please help us spread the word to your family and friends. Happy holiday from us all! :)
