Generous support of CFVI's Jr Angels program has helped to ensure that these dedicated young people are able to continue acting out their passion for service to the community despite the hurricanes’ disruptions, and also served as the catalyst for overall re-design of the program to incorporate increased emphasis on youth-led philanthropy.
From February 2018 to June 2018, Jr Angels completing 955.89 total volunteer hours at 4 sites (Boys & Girls Club, Family Resource Center, Pistarckle Theater afterschool program, and the Humane Society of St. Thomas). Several other sites where
students were placed in previous years were damaged by the hurricanes and were not able to accommodate volunteers this year.
One of the highlights of the Spring was incorporating more philanthropy education and exposure to the students. In particular, students were introduced t o social enterprise and learned first-hand about the most active social enterprise in the Territory, from Jenny Hawkes, the Executive Director of My Brother’s Workshop. Jenny educated the students about social enterprise and led a discussion about how MBW has been serving a critical role in the community since the storms.
In addition to their individual site placements, the Jr Angels also volunteered as a group at various sites and community events, including: beach clean-ups, senior center, fundraising run, and charitable soup kitchen.
Before the students went on summer break, we began to brainstorm topics for the Fall philanthropy projects. Some areas of interest to the students include:
• The number of students that have dropped out of school since the hurricanes
• Need for peer mentoring
• Programs to encourage youth to avoid violence and getting involved in gang
activity
• The need for a swim class on island, as there are a large number of children that
do not know how to swim
• Families that are still living in homes with blue tarp roofs
• Damaged school and athletic facilities and how that will impact the upcoming
school year.
