On a cool Friday afternoon in February 2015, it was a remarkable day for twenty four students (24) of Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja Lagos who graduated after taking LEAP’s 12 month leadership course – Youth Development Training Programme within the school. Even more remarkable is the three community development change projects - Soup Kitchen, Health Fair and Edufunfunds – Dream Starters Savings Club - implemented by these groups of students.
Out of the three, Edufunfunds stood out as the most unique idea presented by the teenagers because financial literacy is not taught as a curriculum in most Nigerian public secondary schools which translates to poor development of a savings culture and entrepreneurship skills amongst teenagers.
Edufunfunds is a poverty and unemployment reduction strategy that will provide a self-sustaining platform to empower future world leaders with its target being public school students.
These projects are some of the several initiatives run by the YDTP trainees across six states in Nigeria. Some schools are still delivering the YDTP curriculum in several states and intend to come up community development projects as their peers in the programme.
YDTP has transformed the once passive students into responsible and impact seeking teenagers who have set clear goals and are ready to commence their journey with a positive outlook. The students are being enlightened on leadership, project cycle management, fundraising, budgeting and writing proposals to compliment their conventional syllabus.
