Letter from the Secretary   Dear Friends,

Hi! How are you all? ‘Hope the year ended has given you some time to think and rethink about your next step of actions towards development.

It’s a great pleasure for me to present the Annual Report (2015-2016) to share our Endeavour, achievement and impact in myriads of people centered rural development interventions carried in some disadvantaged villages of Paschim Medinipur District of the state of West Bengal keeping emphasis on the target people – the poor, the marginalized, the dalits, the socially disadvantaged, the women and the children. Studying the impact of globalization and new economic policies, extreme polarization of haves and have nuts and political dichotomy offending adversely the poor specially the rural ones and smooth functioning of NGOs, we put special thrust to combat the situation on capacity building of our target people, optional mobilization and utilization of local resources in the development of the people and the area. We have also put special emphasis on gender development, women’s access to resources, responsible participation in democratic structure, formation of Self Help Groups and thereby launch sustainable micro enterprise initiative towards self reliance of women. This year we have undertaken No. of programmes in tune with the people and of the area. We have taken a definite step to preserve tribal’s culture by organizing several programmes for them and we have also tried to bring  tribal culture and traditional folk culture of Bengal like Jatra, A Santal dramatic unit has been emerged as a conscience of our effects.

Moreover, I would not like to speak like a talk machine and prefer you to go through next few pages to assess and analyze what actually we have done in the context of development.

I record deep appreciation for the co-operations, we have received for local self govt., different administrative functionaries and also for our own human resources and the people as all levels who shared their agonies as well as ecstasies for their commitment to develop a self reliant society in the barriers of constrains as well as hardships. We know, being a new comer in the development field we have to pass many hurdles, but that’s a way of life too!

PROMOTION OF RURAL PEOPLE CENTRED  DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES

The project redesigned based on earlier in depth evaluation and emerging socio-economic-political-cultural scenario, has given stress on socio-organisational capacity building, support for sustainable livelihood, women empowerment, capacity building on gender and sustainability, promotion of small groups, networking/lobbying for democratic rights etc. The efforts of Barnamala Educational & Cultural Society  on varied development initiatives, progress achieved and impact perceived thereon are presented underneath:-

Early Childhood Education Centre:

This centre at Madanmohan village of Kharagpur-ii Block has equipped children of 3-6 yrs in functional skill of development. While preprimary educations in non formal methodologies are imparted to them, their articulation abilities and communications skills are developed through dramatics, role play, rhymes, songs, dances and chorographical venture. 40 children attend the centre.

Animal welfare:- Barnamala Educational & Cultural Society  is very much committed to the development and protections of companion animals and domestic animals. They run a small health clinic for the animals and intend to build up an animal shelter house with in house dispensary. The number of animals served and sheltered under reporting period were 560 which included dogs, cows, disabled old bulls, goats, cats etc. The organization has also conducted health camps numbering 5 in different villages of Kharagpur-II Blocks. The villagers co-operated highly in the venture. They brought their domestic as well as companion animals numbering 416. The animals have been immunized and treated with great care. This was an immaculate service for the animals.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT & ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT :

One of the prime focuses of Barnamala Educational and Cultural Society is women and their need in our society. Women are still unorganized deprived and marginalized. In our target area most of the women are early school leaver or non school goer. As such, they are not immediately employable. Our motto is to 60% engaged in their own business enable them to generate income and self employment. In view of this we have promoted self help group and provided vocational skill development training.
