It was a pleasure to welcome 500 global young scientists to the 67th London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) which took place between 19th and 31st July 2026. The opening ceremony was a memorable event and included a flag parade of each of the 90 countries represented and a keynote address from Nobel Prize winner Professor John O’Keefe.
This year we awarded eight scholarships for African students to attend the Forum in person; Alice from Kenya, Gabrielle from Cameroon, Prince from Zimbabwe, Mahlet from Ethiopia, Kezia from Ghana, Preston from Uganda and Naomi from Nigeria. Felicia from the Democratic Republic of Congo was unable to travel to London due to visa issues so we enrolled her into the online programme and deferred her in-person attendance to 2027. Kezia, Preston, Naomi and Felicia were the first scholarship students to represent their respective countries at LIYSF and we were thrilled to see these African flags at the opening ceremony. In addition we supported another 12 African students to attend the Forum virtually through the online platform.
The Forum delivered two weeks of lectures, debates, visits to science institutions and social and cultural interactions. As well as exposing our African scholarship students to world leading science it also enabled students from other regions to learn about the opportunities and challenges for African science.
