Focused and meaningful projects

Discussion time!

Thank you for suporting our UK community cohesion projects! Here is our latest update about our UK work.

The weekend of 17-18 October 2015 saw Encompass branch out into a new type of youth residential. This time the objective was not so much bringing young people together for positive change as it was to upskill select, more active members of our steering group and young leaders from Aik Saath, one of our partner organisations. The focus of the weekend was to equip our volunteers with the necessary skills to plan focused and meaningful projects to further the impact of our work.

The venue was Longridge Activity Centre, in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

Saturday was focused around the theory of ‘Objectives’, ‘Outcomes’ and ‘Impact’. The idea around these three key terms was to really get participants to begin planning and working with others, especially young people in a more focused and purposeful way. The steering group worked on a number of new ideas, including a faith trail, a Cultural film screening, DiversiTea, a monthly social media campaign, and an annual 12th October memorial day reunion (in memory of the victims of the Bali terrorist bombing in 2002 - the reason for the creation of Encompass Trust.)

In preparation for the weekend, each participant was tasked to come prepared with a short icebreaker and something to entertain the rest of the group for five minutes… and entertaining it was! We had everything from apples carved as swans, henna hand painting and a recorder, to bhangra, a liquorice shoelace eating race and not forgetting the very strange vegetable rhyme…in Polish!

Sunday morning saw teams feedback on their plans and offer each other feedback. Rob, Programme Manager for Aik Saath has told us that he already feels the impact of the training on his team.

Melissa, one of the programme perticipants said "I really enjoyed the programme. It was fun and most importantly informative! I have some good ideas as to how to put the stuff I learnt in to creating a positive interfaith project in the near future."

We will make sure that we monitor the longer term benefit to the young people that go on our UK programmes and let you know what projects they come up with!

Thank you once again for your support.
