International Recognition: A Decade of Street Medicine in Tanzania
We are proud to share an important milestone in our journey. Our presentation, “A Decade of Street Medicine Practice in Africa: The Tanzania Experience,” has been selected as a plenary lecture at the 22nd International Street Medicine Symposium in Halifax, Canada.
This international recognition reflects more than a decade of commitment to providing healthcare, dignity, and support to children and young people living and working on the streets in Tanzania. It also offers an opportunity to share Tanzania’s experience on a global platform and learn from international partners.
We are currently raising funds to enable two delegates (US $10,000) to attend the symposium, present our work, and build partnerships that will strengthen and expand Street Medicine services in Tanzania. Your continued support will help us translate this recognition into greater impact.
Our Impact in the Last Six Months
From January to June 2026, we provided integrated healthcare and social support to 178 street-connected children and young people through 370 clinical consultations, averaging 2.1 consultations per beneficiary and demonstrating strong continuity of care. More than 90% of consultations involved adolescents aged 10–17 years, one of the most vulnerable groups.
Our services included medical treatment, nutritional assessment, diagnostic screening, neglected tropical disease (NTD) treatment, health education, referrals, food assistance, and other essential social support.
Key Results
During this reporting period, we identified 94 beneficiaries as underweight or severely underweight, highlighting the urgent nutritional needs among street-connected children. We provided food and refreshments during 370 outreach encounters, delivered 275 health education sessions, distributed 177 pairs of open shoes and 108 clothing items, and conducted 154 NTD treatments. Additionally, we identified 59 positive H. pylori cases and detected one HIV-positive case, which was successfully linked to follow-up care.
These results demonstrate that our Street Medicine approach goes beyond treating illness by ensuring early diagnosis, continuous care, prevention, and connection to essential services.
Challenges and the Need for Continued Support
Despite these achievements, significant challenges remain. Undernutrition, communicable diseases linked to poor living conditions, and limited access to specialized diagnostics and referral services continue to affect the children we serve.
With your continued support, we aim to strengthen nutritional programs, expand access to diagnostics and referrals, improve clinical documentation and electronic medical records, and extend our outreach to reach more underserved children and adolescents.
Looking Ahead
This international recognition affirms the impact of our work over the past decade. However, the needs on the ground remain urgent.
