During the period from June to September of this year, within the Environmental Education Program, with the objective of enriching knowledge, in addition to raising awareness among the school and community population, 14 sessions were held on the topics of proper management of solid waste and water care for 790 students.
103 young people from different communities were interested in participating and addressing the environmental problems in their communities regarding the proper management of solid waste, planting trees, growing vegetables, and caring for, saving and storing water.
We also painted four murals on strategically located walls to disseminate information about the biodiversity of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve so that the mountain population can appreciate and learn to value our resources.
We delivered and placed in communities and schools 200 posters with messages about saving water, responsible consumption, and rainwater harvesting as part of learning about the tremendous scarcity and low water levels this year.
To address the problem of water scarcity, 10 75,000-liter liner tanks were donated to store rainwater that falls from community roofs, benefiting 10 communities in vulnerable circumstances.
Currently, 200 teachers committed to the conservation of the natural heritage are about to complete the online diploma course in sustainable development, “Teaching tools for climate action”, and in order to generate a wave of actions that favor the conservation of the different ecosystems that make up the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, they will develop projects in their schools, generating an environmental and social change and thus encourage the school and community population to carry out practices of care and conservation of nature. This will result in cleaner and more orderly schools with the proper separation of solid waste, beautification of green areas, painting of murals with environmental themes, breakfasts with healthy food, and rainwater harvesting.
One of the most relevant activities to maintain beauty and harmony in schools and communities is the annual delivery of 20 thousand trees that are planted in school and community areas, with the objective of preserving ecosystems in healthy conditions and their natural balance, in this Institution we take on the task of restoring soils through the planting of forest and ornamental trees, sensitizing the population in the care and conservation of forests.
The high parts and slopes of the mountainous massif of Pinal de Amoles is the most important area for its hydrological catchment, feeding springs, streams and rivers that benefit numerous towns and communities, both in the Reserve and in the area of influence in Xilitla, S.L.P.
In the schools where the program has been developed for more than three decades, trees have been delivered to create green and recreational areas that guarantee harmony among the school community. Likewise, awareness has been raised among the mountain population so that through the planting of trees, community green areas are created to beautify vacant spaces and generate social participation in the defense and promotion of common goods.
