FYF monitoring developments in Kurdistan / Iraq

Dear friends,

Over the last month, a great deail of turmoil has engulfed Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The Free Yezidi Foundation operation, based in Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, continues to function. However, we have been forced to evacuate our expatriate staff members, namely our British psychologists, and a flight ban in and out of Kurdistan has negatively affected our activities.

We are grateful to our local staff members who have been doing great work in supporting our women, girls, and children. Our projects are still being delivered, and our education, livelihoods, and trauma-reducing activities continue to be implemented.

Please find here the artwork of one talented FYF women's center participant. The peacock is a holy symbol for the Yezidi people.

The Free Yezidi Foundation is hopeful that Baghdad and Erbil are able to settle political and security disputes peacefully, ensure the end of all conflicts, and return the situation to normalcy. The humanitarian community, including the Free Yezidi Foundation, seeks stability and calm to ensure the success of its projects.

I would also like to thank all of you who are supporting our Foundation, through donations big and small. You are making a difference on the ground, each and every day. By the end of November, we will mark two full years since our centers began operating.

Remembering August 3rd

FYF Remembers 3 August with events in Berlin and Washington DC

FYF hosted a vigil in Washington, DC, last year. Please join us again this year
to show support for Yezidi survivors and pay respect to those we have lost.

Dear Friends,

On 3 August 2014, ISIS terrorists overran the town of Sinjar (Shingal), carrying out a pre-meditated plan of mass murder, violence, kidnapping, rape, and other crimes against the Yezidi civilians because of their religion. The attacks have been widely described as genocide, including by the US State Department.

To mark the third anniversary of the genocide perpetrated against the Yezidis, the Free Yezidi Foundation and the American Ezidi Center call upon concerned citizens to join the vigil in front of the White House and express support and solidarity with Yezidis.

Survivors of the Yezidi genocide face immense challenges in trying to rebuild their lives. Sadly, even upon the liberation of Mosul, thousands of Yezidis are still held captive by ISIS terrorists. Meanwhile, survivors seek to improve their lives, despite three years of displacement. Most Yezidis now live in IDP camps in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The Free Yezidi Foundation and the American Ezidi Center would also like to express support for other minority communities affected by the ISIS terror attacks, including Iraqi Christians, who have also suffered enormously.

FYF has been invited to provide the keynote address for the opening session of the Jewish Activism Summer School (JASS) of the University of Potsdam. On 1 August, as the JASS celebrates the Jewish Tisha B'Av holiday at Oranienburgerstrasse Synagogue in Berlin, FYF will discuss the genocide perpetrated by ISIS against the Yezidi people. During the day of 3 August, FYF will participate in a panel at the Hudson Institute in Washington to discuss the situation of Yezidis in Iraq and the vital importance of justice and accountability. Limited seating is available. Further details for this event can be found by clicking here.

This is a day to remember the suffering of the Yezidi people and to show the world that Yezidis are not alone. I would like to thank our Foundation's supporters and friends, and I hope many of you join us with a candle on August 3rd.

FYF women's center graduate receives her diploma on 26 July 2017.

On a brighter note, women and children attending the FYF centers in Duhok have graduated this week. We would like to warmly thank FYF staff members for their hard work and applaud our recent graduates and wish them success in the future.
