Work With Dignity For Venezuelan Women In Peru - 1st Report

By Claudia Esparza | President

First of all, we hope while you are reading this, you and your loved ones are healthy and safe.

This year has started under a special situation for all of us. The world is working to go through COVID-19, the best possible way. In Peru we have been under lockdown since mid-March, until today. Nobody knows for sure how long this will take.

If Venezuelan people were suffering here before the pandemic, today their situation is worse yet.

Lupe, a member of our team told us: 'At Chorrillos, my neighborhood, it was quite common to see some Venezuelan people by the streets, selling things, sometimes even asking for money. I had to leave my house during quarantine some days ago to buy groceries for my family, and what I saw was absolutely devastating, the number of Venezuelans at the street in poverty conditions have multiply. They were there with their children, suffering hunger and the cool weather'.

Because of quarantine more than 1 million people have lost their formal jobs in Peru. The total number considering formal and informal jobs nobody knows, but we know informal ones' situation is worse. Unfortunatelly Venezuelan people are in those numbers.

Although the circumstances, we are already working with Nanas & Amas, developing the mobile application that will allow 5K Venezuelan women in Lima to have access to per-hour work opportunities cleanning homes and offices. The plan is to be able to lauch it by the end of September.

Through the mobile app the customers will be able to learn about the journey the woman they are hiring, has taken to arrive to Peru. They will learn what they used to do in Venezuela, what career they had (most of Venezuelan people that has arrived to Peru is profesional people, although they live in poverty because it is really hard for them to find a job opportunity) and what they dream about. Our ultimate goal is to allow Venezuelan women to develop a network of their own, with people who would recommend them for jobs related with their profession.

We would need support to cover the expenses for the first two years of the project, mainly for the evaluation and trainning process each of the women that are going to be part of this project should pass before start working.

If you are willing to support them, you can donate here or share this article with people willing to support the Venezuelan community.

Thank you for joining us in this journey.

Best wishes,

Claudia
